"The Twinning Project" between Italy and the USA

October 16, 2025
On the occasion of the Week of the Italian Language in the World, the third biennium of the ITALY–USA Twinning Project officially opened with an event of great symbolic and cultural significance.
We had the honor of being hosted by Vatican Radio, where we had the privilege of speaking with two exceptional guests: Maestro Paolo Bianchini, a film director of extraordinary sensitivity, and Samuele Palumbo, actor and violinist.
At the center of our conversation was the film Il Cannone della Pace (“The Cannon of Peace”): an intense work capable of conveying a universal message of hope and humanity through images and words of rare beauty.
A heartfelt thank-you to Stefano Sparro, Felicia Toscano, Luigi Picardi, the Head of the School Office Francesca Vanoli, journalist Federica Brogna, and all the schools involved in the project: Oxon Hill HS, Jackson-Reed HS, Istituto Capellini-Sauro La Spezia, Liceo Galileo Ferraris in Varese, Liceo Sereni in Luino, and Daverio-Casula-Nervi in Varese.

Great journalism took center stage at the second meeting of the third biennium of the ITALY–USA Twinning Project with Massimo Nava!
Connecting the “Galileo Ferraris” Science High School in Varese with its Italian and U.S. partner schools, we had the honor of hosting Massimo Nava, columnist for Corriere della Sera and a direct witness to contemporary history. Also present was Dr. Francesca Vanoli, Director of the School Office at the Embassy in Washington.

The event, moderated by journalist Eleonora Lorusso, moved teachers and students alike through Nava’s stories: from the fall of the Berlin Wall to missions in the Balkans and Iraq, all the way to his most recent book, Quella sera in Galleria, written to mark the 150th anniversary of Corriere della Sera.

Emotion, memory, and dialogue: the Twinning Project continues to bring together cultures and generations!

The event, further enriched by the voice of Stefano Sparro from the Vatican Radio headquarters, was hosted at the Italian Embassy in Washington, with the participation of Italian language students from Jackson Reed High School.

The special guest of the January event was the internationally renowned artist Caty Forden, who joined from Berlin to share her creative journey and engage in an open and thoughtful dialogue with the students. She was introduced by journalist Sara Gay Forden, author of House of Gucci, the book on which the well-known film by Ridley Scott is based.
In an era in which artificial intelligence seems to dominate every horizon, Caty reminded students that the creative gesture — the hand that draws, the eye that chooses and interprets — remains an essential tool for shaping the world and understanding its deepest nuances.
