"Music classes were a part of my public school education. I also studied an instrument for a time and my children studied piano. I felt like I had a fairly good appreciation for music...that is, until I enrolled in Paolo Schianchi's music history and appreciation class. Paolo opened a window in the world of music that I did not know existed. "

The talent of Paolo Schianchi - Italian who moved to the USA thanks to an EB-1 "Einsiten" visa, performer outside the box, inventor of "music machines" and popularizer (TED Talk, UnoMattina RAI 1, Tu si Que Vales - Canale 5, Pavilion Italia EXPO 2015, Rome Auditorium, etc...) - will guide you through a journey through the incredible stories that hide behind songs and composers who are linked to Italy by origin or vicissitudes. The course will allow you to discover many curiosities of the world of music, to deepen your knowledge (with particular attention to the inestimable and surprising Italian heritage, from the Renaissance to today), to learn to recognize elements of style and appreciate the richness and value it has stood the test of centuries or still influences the music of these very days all over the world.
The ratings proposed, belonging to multiple genres and styles (which includepop, rock, opera, classical music, popular music, etc…) will beguided and commented, because good listening is only possible if you know how to orient yourself in the musical language by recognizing its "architectural" elements.
We will listen to the music - both performed live and recorded (audio/video/cinema) - discovering it through the eyes of those who composed and experienced it, and observing it from different points of view: the historical one (a face-to-face meeting with some great figures of music), the organological point of view (musical instruments and their peculiarities), the stylistic point of view, and finally the cultural point of view.
The focus of the course will be the music of Italy, to regain possession of one's roots, but in encountering the history of Italian music we will encounter the stories of people who have changed the course of history by influencing the way of making music all over the world, crossing barriers and borders, both geographical, cultural and musical.

We live on the shoulders of giants and this is the opportunity to get to know and rediscover those who made Italy great and left an indelible mark on the world, which is still extraordinarily visible today.
